Micro and Macro Resilience Measures of an Economic Crisis

2020

Using Italian Households Budget Survey data over the period 1997-2013, a Cragg model in a life-cycle context is specified to compare the consumption behaviour in the pre- and post-crisis time and develop different micro and macro measures of resilience against crisis shocks. Cohort profiles for participation in and for consumption of tourism services in the pre- and post-crisis time are determined so as to explore the households’ resilience by generations. Next, the households’ resilience according to socio-demographic characteristics is addressed. As for the macro-resilience, combining individual expenditure elasticity, we examine whether and how Italian regions have responded to the recen…

Smart-City Citizen Engagement: The Answer to Energy Savings in an Economic Crisis?

2022

As the populations of cities grow, it is obvious that they need more and more resources. Energy is currently one of the most desirable resources due to the economic and energy crisis, but it needs to be used in a sustainable manner. There are cities that achieve smart city (SC) status that provide smart policies towards sustainable development. The aim of the present paper is to determine whether citizen engagement in SC can contribute to reduced energy consumption in the current economic crisis. The paper presents an original survey intended to collect primary data and a study conducted based exclusively on qualitative methods. The results concern a broad and multifaceted review of literat…

Fighting the COVID-19 Crisis: Debt Monétisation and EU Recovery Bonds

2020

AbstractThis paper highlights some peculiar characteristics of the economic crisis induced by the spread of COVID-19. It suggests two intertwined policy measures in order to tackle the emergency phase of the crisis and to support the economy in the subsequent recovery phase. The proposed short-term policy measures offer policy responses in the event of a second wave of coronavirus infections in the coming months. In the aftermath of the emergency phase, the current proposal puts forward the implementation of a massive EU-wide recovery plan addressing the long-lasting technological and environmental challenges of these years, which will be financed by European institutions through the issuan…

DISTRIBUTISM - WAY FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC RECOVERY

2013

As history of the last centuries has shown, the capitalism and the communism are generating economic crisis, in connection with a deeper crisis, i.e. the spiritual crisis, driven by the tendency of man’s massification,, by which his spiritual qualities are strongly tainted over time. Distributism, promoting widespread ownership of productive ownership, is the only economic frame adequate to the anthropology of the person, namely of a true man.

Tra Stato e mercato: l'economia italiana nei turbolenti anni Settanta

2019

During the 1970s, Italy faced the decline of the political and economic order that had emerged in the first post-war decades, which in Western countries was characterised by financial stability, affirmation of mass industry, economic planning, sustained growth in income and consumption and an improvement in the living conditions of the working class. In Italy too, in the course of the 1970s, the model was at the top of the success on the one hand and showed unequivocal signs of exhaustion on the other. It was, for Italy and elsewhere, a transition prompted by causes of both an economic and political nature, and which came to an end in many ways in the 1980s.

Overcoming the crisis : the changing profile and trajectories of Latvian migrants

2016

The work was funded by the National Research Programme [grant number 5.2.4] and the Latvian Council of Sciences [grant number 514/2012]. Taking mobility between Latvia and Western Europe as an empirical lens, this analysis explores the complex relationship between spatial disparities in earning potential and migration. The very dramatic shifts in the economic and political context against which migration from Latvia has occurred over the period 2004-2012 make it an especially apposite focus of research investigating the link between mobility and labour market circumstances. As an analytical starting point, conventional economic theory broadly explains the movement of workers from lower to h…

Hidden costs of cuts: austerity, civil service management and the motivation of public officials in Central and Eastern Europe after the crisis

2016

The implementation of austerity measures presents a dilemma for governments. While austerity measures such as cutbacks aim to reduce costs and enhance public sector efficiency, the same measures might undermine the motivation of employees and, consequently, the prospects of effectively implementing austerity programmes. Based on a survey of ministerial officials in Poland and Latvia, this article finds that the scale of cutbacks explains a larger decline of staff motivation in Latvia than in Poland. The article further shows that motivation was more likely to decrease after the crisis if austerity measures involved cutbacks such as staff reductions, recruitment freezes, and a reduction of t…

The effects of the economic crisis on the school to work transitions of youths in France

2013

Using longitudinal data from the 'Generation' surveys carried out by Céreq that provides information on the first seven years on the labour market, this paper focuses on the consequences of the 2008 crisis on employment and job quality for the youth. Firstly, using the Generation 2004 survey, the situations are studied in terms of employability and vulnerability for two sub-periods (2004-2008 and 2009-2011). Secondly, youth transition is analyzed in terms of labour market segmentation or access to the primary segment or to the 'good jobs'. By doing so, it is possible to observe the effects of the crisis in terms of access to 'good jobs' using a model regression and another youth cohort (Gen…
